For the third time in seven weeks, rescue crews have pulled someone from the rapidly-flowing Cedar River in Cedar Falls.

The latest rescue occurred on Wednesday (May 31, 2017). Cedar Falls police confirmed that 911 dispatchers received a call about a man falling into the river around 9:45 a.m. The man was reported to be downstream from the dam that's adjacent to the Ice House Museum.

Cedar Falls fire, police and Sartori Hospital paramedics responded to south bank of the Cedar River. When rescue crews arrived, they saw the man surface in shallow water near the railroad bridge, approximately 500 feet downstream from the dam. Authorities said the man started walking toward the shoreline and was rescued by rope from first responders.

Police identified the victim as Christopher Saddler, 32, of Cedar Falls. He was transported to Sartori Hospital.

Wednesday's rescue marks the third such incident to occur in the same area of the river in recent weeks.

On April 13, a Waterloo man slipped on a rock and fell in the river while fishing near the Ice House Museum. Anthony “Tony” Romero, 41, apparently lost consciousness when he got caught in the strong current. Romero died three days later at a local hospital.

Rescuers also pulled a young Waterloo woman from the water on May 14. Chloe Adams, 18, was walking along the shore watching a friend fish when she slipped into the river by the dam. Adams was briefly pulled under the water by the swift current, before resurfacing in a calm area. She suffered minor injuries.
