A news release issued by the City of Hastings says firefighters responded to the fire at Hastings Creamery around 10:30 Wednesday night. Upon arrival crews reported seeing flames and heavy smoke coming from the main building on the property.

Hastings firefighters requested mutual aid from seven surrounding agencies to fight the fire. Neighbors in the area were told to shut their windows and remain indoors due to concern of harmful chemicals being put into the air by the fire.

Air testing around the site did not detect the presence of harmful chemicals, officials say. No injuries were reported and the creamery is no longer in operation.

Crews shutdown Hwy. 61 in the area of the creamery during the firefight. The road has since been allowed to reopen.
