It was a meaty battle between the best burgers in Iowa and New York, but in case you missed it, just a few days ago, the Tombstone from Marshalltown's The Flying Elbow laid the smack down on New York's Ale 'n Angus Pub of Syracuse and their Holy Smokers as the ultimate burger.

The Tombstone had been chosen after a vote back in March through the Iowa Cattlemen's Association as the Best Burger in the state, but a Cedar Rapids eatery has just won the honor in a "kinder, gentler" battle of the beef, conducted by the national publication Reader's Digest.

According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, the magazine picked what it considered to be the best burger in each state, and here in Iowa, BurgerFiend was their choice. In describing why it chose BurgerFiend, here's what Reader's Digest had to say:

Take your pick of single, double, triple, or quad burgers featuring patties made with USDA choice Angus beef. And don’t skimp on the toppings—you can load up on sauces, veggies, and cheese. Rounding out the menu are milkshakes, sandwiches, hand-cut fries, and “fiend fries” (gyro, tzatziki, American cheese, caramelized onions, and jalapeños).

BurgerFiend is back down to one location in Cedar Rapids, after closing its restaurant on Center Point Road NE. If you haven't been there in a while, stop by and support the new "best burger" in the state at 2020 16th Ave. SW. And learn more about the other state's winning burgers as compiled by the folks at Reader's Digest here.
