Man’s Body Found In Burning Cedar Falls Home

Cedar Falls public safety officials found the body of a man when responding to a house fire in this city early Wednesday.

Authorities identified the victim as 62-year-old Timothy Hersey, but they aren't yet sure if the fire caused his death. There is an ongoing investigation to determine the cause and contributing factors, public safety officials said. The State Fire Marshal’s office has been called in to assist in the investigation.

According to authorities, Hersey's body was found inside a burning home at 616 W. 1st St., which is also Iowa Highway 57. Public safety officials were dispatched to the residential fire shortly after 4 AM.

When they arrived, fire crews found the kitchen on the back side of the house fully engulfed. According to officials, heavy smoke was billowing from all four sides of the home.

Public safety officials entered the structure and quickly extinguished the fire. They said Hersey's body was found in the kitchen.

Statistics show there have been 13 fatal fires in Iowa this year, but none have been reported in the past four months. According to figures posted on the State Fire Marshal's website, the most recent fatal fire in Iowa occurred on May 21, when a 65-year-old Davenport man died of thermal and inhalation injuries in a house fire.
