The Iowa Farm Sanctuary became the only animal sanctuary in Iowa to be recognized internationally for its animal care standards. This recognition earned the sanctuary Accredited status from the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS).

What this means is that the Iowa Farm Sanctuary meets GFAS’ peer-reviewed animal standards. These are also confirmed with a site visit. The accreditation process looks at the sustainability of the organization, ethical principles, finances, staffing, education, outreach, security and safety, and other operational aspects.

The Iowa Farm Sanctuary is a safe haven for rescued farm animals. According to the sanctuary’s website, “each farm animal living at Iowa Farm Sanctuary has been rescued. Whether they were removed from a situation of abuse, saved from becoming someone’s dinner, or surrendered into our care by a loving guardian, the residents each have a different story.

When the sanctuary first opened in 2016, it was the “state’s first vegan farmed animal sanctuary”.

Jessica Harris, MS, GFAS Farmed Animal Program Director says they are thrilled to be working with the Iowa Farm Sanctuary,

The juxtaposition of the individualized care and consideration they provide to each resident against the backdrop of American agribusiness is extraordinary. Their attention to special needs animals, expertise in emergency care, and impressive outreach strategy demonstrate the level of excellence at which they operate. We look forward to continuing to support their mission and aspirations in helping farmed animals.

The sanctuary received its accreditation on February 1st of this year.
