Three people and a dog escaped a burning Independence home uninjured Sunday afternoon.

The fire broke out just after 4 PM at 207 3rd Street Northeast. Officials said the two-house sustained heavy damage.

According to Independence firefighters, a neighbor alerted the people inside the home. One adult and two children got out safely, along with the family pet.

Large flames and thick smoke were billowing from the front and back of the two-story house when crews arrived, Independence fire officials said. Firefighters from Jesup and Winthrop assisted the crews from Independence.

According to a press release, the fire was under control in under 60 minutes, but firefighters were at the scene for nearly three-and-a-half hours. Independence fire officials say investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire.

The American Red Cross and Salvation Army of Buchanan County are assisting the family.
