Iowa, Were These The Worst Farm Chores Growing Up?
We all know that farming is a full-time job that if you are fortunate enough to be born into, you start at a pretty young age. When you are a young kid working on the farm, your first task is probably not going to be running the combine but you can do some of the more grueling farm work that is easier for the “young and able-bodied” chore list.
Starting kids with chores around the farm can help teach them responsibility, but it can also be a way to train the future generation to take over the family operation.
Now chores are going to vary based on what type of operation you have. For example, if you have small animals such as chickens, that can be a good place to start with kids. As they get older the chores become more advanced.
And you are not going to love doing every task you are given on the farm. Ag-Web recently conducted a poll with its readers about what their least favorite childhood farm chore was, or as they asked it “what is one childhood farm chore you do NOT miss?”
Over 1,200 people answered the survey and here are the top chores people do not miss from their childhood:
- Chopping weeds in soybean fields- 25%
- Picking up rocks- 20%
- Hauling in square straw or hay bales- 16%
The survey identified some of the lower-ranking chores people voted for:
- Cleaning grain bins- 8%
- Weeding the family garden- 7%
- Fixing fence- 5%
- Power washing the barn-3%
Do you agree with this list? Are there any chores you think they missed?
