A horse that showed signs consistent with Equine Herpes Myeloencephalitis has tested positive for EHV-1 - according to the Colorado State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. The specific horse was euthanized due to complications from the neurologic form of the disease. Another horse that resided with the infected horse has developed a fever and is considered a suspect case. Colorado State Veterinarian Dr. Keith Roehr says disease prevention practices and good biosecurity should be implemented as horse owners plan to travel to various events. The state veterinarian’s office is in the process of contacting contestants involved in the National High School Rodeo and Colorado Junior Rodeo Association events in Henderson April 26th and 27th, Eagle May 2nd and 4th and Rocky Ford May 10th and 11th - as the EHV-1 positive horse and its stable-mates traveled to these events. If your horse attended any of these events - monitor its temperature twice a day and report temperatures more than 101.5-degrees to your veterinarian. Also - isolate your horse from others - if possible - for at least 21-days past the event.
