Waterloo Man Sentenced for Murder of Girlfriend’s Brother

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — A man has been given life in prison for fatally stabbing his girlfriend's brother in Waterloo.

Martez Smith was sentenced Monday. He'd been found guilty Jan. 27 of first-degree murder for killing Shawonyta "Marq" Norman Sr. and of domestic violence for shoving Latres Johnson. The crimes occurred outside Smith and Johnson's home Nov. 25, 2014.

Prosecutors say Smith shoved his girlfriend, Johnson, and then stabbed her brother, Norman, when he intervened. Authorities say Smith stabbed Norman five times in the chest and abdomen.
