In the Midwest, precipitation extremes impact resources, economies, and communities. Despite a historical shift towards wetter conditions, droughts disrupt vital aspects of life, from transportation to agriculture and water supplies, posing ongoing challenges.

While things might seem dismal right now for farmers and this extreme drought, officials claim that there is some sort of light at the end of the tunnel.

The rain will be lasting well into the weekend.

The region could see some much-needed precipitation this weekend.

In November, drought in Iowa peaked before entering one of the state’s wettest winters.

About 84 percent of Iowa is experiencing some degree of drought.

While much of Iowa has been hit by worsening drought, our farmers have taken advantage of the wet conditions and are reaping the rewards in this year’s yields.

While it can be fun to walk to places you may not have had access to in the past, these low water levels are going to cause slowdowns for our farmers.

As we get into 2022, drought is expected to expand across the western region, raising concerns for another year like 2012- with extreme heat and drought.

Despite heavy rain and snow the US Drought Monitor shows more than 500,000 people in Iowa living in drought conditions.
