The Cedar Valley took a direct hit from severe weather that rolled across northeast Iowa Thursday afternoon.

The storms dumped heavy rain that caused street flooding in Waterloo and Cedar Falls. At 1:30 PM, Mid-American Energy was reporting nearly 7,900 customers were without power in Waterloo. Around 4 PM, Cedar Falls Utilities was reporting more than 700 outages in at least two separate parts of the city. Crews were working to restore electricity to the effected areas.

Wind gusts as high as 66 miles per hour uprooted several trees in Cedar Falls. Some of the hardest hit parts of town were a neighborhood around Cedar Heights Elementary School and a North Cedar neighborhood north of Lone Tree Road (SEE PHOTOS & VIDEOS BELOW).

As the storms moved northeast, sheriff's officials reported damage in Fayette County. They captured video (posted below) of an apparent tornado ripping the roof off a building at a business along South Pine Street in West Union.
