The City of Oelwein now has a new Councilperson.

At this week's regular meeting, the Oelwein council voted to appoint Lou Ann Milks to represent the city's Third Ward.

The seat has been vacant for a couple of weeks, after then-councilman Jim Petersen resigned over health concerns.  The council unanimously approved appointing a new member, rather than hold a special election. The term will run to the end of the year.

After approving Milks' appointment, she then took the oath of office.

Only one other Oelwein resident, John Walker, expressed an interest in that council seat. Walker had indicated to city leaders that if he were not chosen and appointed for the council seat, he would petition for a special election.
