RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — An Iowa-based concrete supplier is making a second attempt to establish a limestone quarry in a scenic part of western South Dakota.

Croell Redi-Mix Inc., of New Hampton, Iowa, is asking the Pennington County Commission to approve a construction permit to expand the Perli Quarry southwest of Rapid City.

The quarry is near the Reptile Gardens and Bear Country USA tourist attractions and on a prime tourist route to Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

Some area residents fear a larger open-pit rock quarry might spoil the scenic Black Hills area, endanger highway traffic and damage residential water wells.

Croell Redi-Mix last year sought permission to open a different limestone quarry in the area. County officials rejected the request.
