Mason City Upends Unbeaten Western Dubuque, 47-39
Mason City is playing on at the 2016 Iowa High School Girls State Basketball Tournament -- and Marci Wolters is a big reason.
Wolters, a senior, who averages a modest 6.6 points a game, hit what might have been the team's two biggest shots of the season as the ninth-ranked Mohawks knocked off top-ranked Western Dubuque 47-39 to open the Class-4A quarterfinals Tuesday evening (March 1).
With Mason City struggling to make a basket, Wolters swished consecutive 3-pointers to erase Western Dubuque's final lead and put the Mohawks up 38-33 with 2:16 remaining.
Mason City then did the rest at the free throw line, making nine of 10 in the final 1:23 to hand Western Dubuque its first loss. Rachel Danielson went 7-for-8 in that stretch, her only points of the game, and Makenzie Meyer made two.
Wolters finished 3-for-4 from 3-point range and led Mason City with 11 points. Meyer, who'll play at Iowa next season, added 10 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals. Her sister Megan, a freshman, had a solid game with nine points and four rebounds.
Northern Iowa signee Megan Maahs put up 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead Western Dubuque, the state runner-up each of the past two years. Morgan Pitz, playing despite a torn ACL, added 12 points.
Mason City appeared to be taking control when it opened a 21-14 lead midway through the second quarter. But Pitz hit two 3-pointers and a layup to cut the lead to 23-22 at halftime. It was 26-all after the two teams combined to shoot just 2-for-13 in the third quarter, and they went back and forth in the final period until Wolters stepped up from long range.
Mason City, which plays in the Class 5A CIML, takes a 16-8 record into a semifinal game at 10 a.m. Friday. Western Dubuque, unbeaten in the last two regular seasons, finishes 24-1.
