Iowa Men’s Basketball Lands Horizon League Star Player
The Iowa men's basketball team has landed a new star player from the Horizon League.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that Alvaro Folgueiras is transferring from Robert Morris to the University of Iowa. He was the 2025 Player of the Year in the Horizon League. The six-foot-nine-inch Folgueiras played forward and can rebound and hit shots from three-point range.
As a sophomore at Robert Morris, Folgueiras averaged 14 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. The Colonials went 26-9 and won the Horizon League regular season title and the tournament title in March, according to the Gazette. They were a 15-seed in the NCAA Tournament and lost to 2-seed Alabama 90-81. Folguerias had 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Folgueiras shot over 54% from the field, including 41% from three-point range. He had 12 double-double games, and has career highs of 35 points and 19 rebounds according to the Gazette. His commitment to Iowa is another big win for new Hawkeye coach Ben McCollum. Folguerias is the seventh player to transfer to Iowa, and the Hawkeyes' ninth scholarship player.
And in some sort of ironic twist of fate, the Gazette reports that Iowa's first game of the Ben McCollum era will be November 4th in Iowa City against...you guessed it...Robert Morris.
