Hawkeye Football Recruit Sets New Iowa State High School Yardage Record

Congratulations to the state of Iowa's new record holder in yards from scrimmage with an incredible yardage total in his career.

In Monticello's 45-0 victory over Jesup Friday night (10/27) in the Iowa High School football playoffs, Monticello Panthers quarterback Preston Ries set the all-time mark.

Ries has now amassed 12,052 yards passing and rushing during his career. He's amassed almost all of those yards over the last three seasons. After passing for 127 yards and rushing for 471 more during his freshman season, he has been virtually unstopped from his sophomore through senior seasons. What's equally impressive is his consistency during those 3 years.

As a sophomore, Ries threw for 2,594 yards and rushed for 1,343. His junior campaign brought 2,543 yards through the air, and another 1,421 on the ground.

This season, Ries has thrown for 1,998 yards and rushed for 1,555. It all combined for a massive yardage total that he'll still add onto. Monticello (9-1) plays at Mediapolis (8-2) this Friday night, November 3, in the Class 2A round of 8.

How tremendous of an athlete is Ries? Back in September, he was one of 51 high school football players from around the country named to the watch list for the Butkus Award for the nation's best linebacker. As you can see below, two of the other remaining 50 are not only from Iowa but are headed to Iowa City, to play for the Hawkeyes next fall.

Ries committed to Iowa in May of 2022 and is expected to play linebacker for the Hawkeyes. ESPN ranks him as a 4-star recruit.

I mentioned Ries is a fantastic athlete. He's also quite a basketball player. Last season, KCRG TV-9 named him Athlete of the Week for his work on the basketball court.

Ries could play three more high school football games. How many more yards will he be able to accumulate? We'll have to wait and see but as Scott Saville said in the video above, "Iowa is getting another great one."
