The Hy-Vee Grocery Store chain will once again be offering the community the chance to get a free meal this week. The contactless drive-thru event will happen on Thursday, September 16th at the 1st Avenue Hy-Vee store in Cedar Rapids, according to CBS2.

The free meal giveaway will start at 4 p.m. tomorrow afternoon and last until 6 p.m. or until supplies run out. CBS2 reports that Hy-Vee is doing the free meal giveaway in conjunction with National Family Meals Month, which lasts the month of September. The industry-inspired movement is led by FMI, or The Food Industry Association. Their goal is to raise awareness of the health and social benefits of sharing a family meal together. Hy-Vee is also recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th through October 15th. The grocery store chain says that they will be handing out meals that support other cultures.

One free meal will be handed out to the first 250 people in line either through drive-through or walk-up at the Hy-Vee on First Avenue in Cedar Rapids tomorrow afternoon. The event will be held along the east side of the store. CBS2 reports that meals will be handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis while supplies last. Customers will be able to choose from one of three meal options.

  • lasagna
  • beef enchiladas
  • Asian vegetable lo Mein

Hy-Vee will load the meals into customer's vehicles using a contactless method to reduce contact and ensure social distancing. So if you want a free meal, the First Avenue Hy-Vee will be the place to be Thursday afternoon starting at 4 p.m.
