More than a dozen teams from the Cedar Valley and northeast Iowa are featured in the second volleyball rankings of the season released by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) late Thursday afternoon.

Six of the squads are rated among the top five in their respective classes. The North Iowa Cedar League (NICL) -- considered one of the toughest conferences for volleyball across the state -- is well-represented, with half of circuit's 16 teams in the poll.

Dike-New Hartford (No. 1) and Denver (No. 2) are the top squads in Class 2A. Both are ranked ahead of four other NICL rivals: Wapsie Valley (No. 5), South Hardin (No. 6), Sumner-Fredericksburg (No. 7), and Grundy Center (No. 9).

No. 3 Gladbrook-Reinbeck, another NICL member, is the highest-ranked area team in Class 1A. The Rebels are four spots ahead of seventh-ranked North Tama, which cracked the top 15 for the first time this year. No. 15 Janesville holds the same spot it had in the preseason poll.

Three area teams -- West Delaware (No. 2), Independence (No. 11), and La Porte City Union (No. 12) -- are featured in the Class 3A rankings. Waverly-Shell Rock (No. 6 in Class 4A) and Cedar Falls (No. 8 in Class 5A) are also considered strong contenders to compete for a state title this year.
