13 Ways Iowans Can Improve Their Friday the 13th Luck
It happens every year, some years more than others—it’s Friday the 13th. For some, it’s just another Friday, but for others, the date just means bad news.
If you are someone that is dreading the thought of Friday the 13th, the Farmers Almanac has some classic tips to improve your luck today.
Knock on Wood
We have all heard someone say “knock on wood” at least once in our lives but why do we do it? Well, it was believed that trees have good spirits living in them, and knocking on them would call these spirits for protection.
Find a Four-Leaf Clover
Another classic symbol of good luck. While I thought this symbol brought luck because they are “rare”, there is a more traditional meaning. The ancient druids believed shamrocks help see evil spirits- which can help you avoid them.
Wear Your Clothes Inside Out
This one doesn’t have a deeper meaning behind it but it’s a widespread belief that if you wear your clothes inside out, it will bring you luck.
Look at the New Moon Over Your Right Shoulder
According to moon folklore, looking at the moon over your right shoulder will bring you good luck. Some say that if you look at it over your left shoulder it can bring bad luck.
Break Clear, Uncolored Glass
Purposely breaking glass can take on the bad luck you have. According to Angelical Balance, some believe that a broken glass cup or bowl will bring good fortune and money. When people break glass at weddings, it symbolizes good fortune and chases away evils.
Sleep Facing South
People believe that if you sleep facing south, it promotes good health and fortune. This belief comes from the Chinese art of feng shui, which contributes to geographic locations with positive energy.
Sleep on Un-Ironed Sheets
Ok, but who irons their sheets anyways?
Walk in the Rain
Rain is a sign of good luck. The Farmers Almanac points to crops with this one. Before the use of widespread irrigation, a successful crop year was determined by how much it rained.
Avoid the Cracks in the Sidewalk
Remember the saying “step on a crack, break your mother’s back”? Maybe it’s just a good idea altogether to avoid the cracks.
Sneeze Three Times Before Breakfast
This one comes from the idea of the Christian trinity and that the number three is a lucky number in many cultures.
Carry an Acorn in Your Pocket
This is a symbol of fertility and long life.
Pick up a Pencil, a Pin, a Penny, or a Piece of Coal on the Street
Remember the saying Find a penny; pick it up, and all the day; you’ll have good luck? Well, these other items also have that same luck attached to them.
Keep Crossing Your Fingers
Crossing your fingers makes the sign of Christian faith which is believed to prevent evil spirits from ruining your day.
