WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — France will be honoring a Waterloo man for his role in the nation's World War II liberation from German rule.

Ninety-one-year-old Glen McClain will be receiving the French Legion of Honor at a 1 p.m. ceremony Saturday at the Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum in Waterloo.

The French government is awarding the medal to living World War II veterans who participated in military campaigns that helped free France.

McClain lost nearly all of his shipmates when his landing craft struck a mine on June 6, 1944, during the D-Day landings on France's Normandy coast.
