A Waterloo educator has won a seat on the city council.

Residents in Ward 5 elected Ray Feuss to be their representative during a special election held on Tuesday (Dec. 11, 2018). Feuss was chosen to fill the seat that's been vacant since Aug. 10, when Chris Shimp resigned. He will serve the remainder of Shimp's term, which runs through Dec. 2021.

Unofficial numbers released by the Black Hawk County Auditor's Office show that Feuss beat local contractor Jason Welch by a 400-vote margin, 736 to 336, with one write-in. Nearly 69-percent of the voters favored Feuss, who easily won all six precincts in the ward.

Election results are expected to be canvassed by the Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday. Feuss could be sworn-in after the vote totals are certified.

In another special election on Tuesday, voters in the Dunkerton School District overwhelmingly chose to extend a Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) for another 10 years. The margin was 101-Yes to 29-No.

Money generated by the PPEL can be used to pay for specific maintenance and technology needs over the next decade. According to district officials, the levy raises about $280,000 annually.
