Two people were sent to the hospital following an 11-vehicle pile-up in Waterloo Wednesday morning.

Jill Ford, 49, of Allison, and Jacob Dolan, 32, of Waterloo, were both transported to separate hospitals in the city to be treated for undisclosed injuries, the Iowa State Patrol said.

The pile-up happened shortly after 9 AM in the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 218 between Ansborough and Fletcher Avenues. According to authorities, weather was a factor in the crash.

The Iowa State Patrol said the pile-up began when a semi couldn't stop on the ice-covered pavement. The semi slammed into a garbage truck, which triggered the pile-up.

The multiple-vehicle crash was among several that occurred on the slick highway in Waterloo Wednesday morning.

About two hours earlier, authorities were forced to close the U.S. 218 downtown overpass because of multiple accidents. Waterloo police reported that three vehicles collided in the northbound lanes near the U.S. Highway 63/Sergeant Road interchange. While officers were on the scene of that crash, another one -- involving a car and school bus -- occurred in the southbound lanes.

No children were on the bus at the time of the accident. No injuries were reported with either of the initial crashes.
