Storm Chasers Were In MN Yesterday, Get Ready For The Other Type
With the wild weather that happened in parts of Minnesota yesterday, it wasn't surprising that legit storm chasers and meteorologists from the major networks were in Minnesota, hoping to catch some extreme weather/storms. While it wasn't as BIG as the chasers had hoped for, Minnesotans who experienced hail, high winds, and tornadoes are now going to have to be on the lookout for the other type of storm chasers, the ones who fly in after a storm to make a quick buck.
Southern Minnesota Was In The Weather Spotlight
Ginger Zee, from ABC was in Albert Lea yesterday afternoon waiting for the storms to come through. It's great to see the Land Between The Lakes be spotlighted, and it made sense that Ginger would be there, as it sits at the intersection of I-90 and I-35, so if the weather turned bad in Northern Iowa, she would be on top of it.
Reed Timmer, known for embedding himself into some of the most severe weather storms and scenarios imaginable, was also in Southeastern Minnesota yesterday, before he drove down to Iowa to chase.
Beware of follow-up storm chasers
Now that the weather has calmed down, you can all but guarantee that you'll have a knock on your door, or a flyer rubberbanded to your door knob from someone looking to hop on your roof, or inspect your siding for damage, all, generally in the name of making a buck.
Protect yourself from these types of businesses by doing these three things.
1. Get multiple estimates - if someone shows up at your place, without you calling, offering you a deal that seems too good to be true, it probably is. Call around and get some estimates.
2. Don't give in to the pressure - Many of these 'storm chasers' will often pressure you to make a decision right away, take your time, don't give in to the high-pressure techniques. It can be tough to spot sometimes, as you might be more worried about getting your roof or siding fixe,d that you don't realize what the person selling is talking about. Don't sign anything without reading it!
3. Be aware of large upfront pricing - Be wary of contractors demanding large upfront payments. A reputable contractor will typically have a clear payment schedule outlined in the contract.
BONUS TIP - Call your insurance agent, and let them know you had some storm damage. Once you get your agent involved, they can offer up assistance in getting your home/roof back in order.
