I may not be the biggest sports fan but if you invite me over to watch the Super Bowl, you bet I am showing up for three things; the commercials, the drinks, and the food.

As I was helping my boyfriend plan our Super Bowl party this year, one topic that we heavily debated was what kind of chicken wings we were going to do. Frozen preprepared, or prepare our own. After weighing our options, we decided to make our own so that we can do a “sauce bar” to flavor the wings.

Looking at chicken wing price averages by the USDA’s Economic Research Service, this was not a bad choice.

Just ahead of the Super Bowl and college basketball championship tournaments, two major chicken wing-eating sports gatherings, the price of chicken wings has gone down.

Previously, the combination of limited supplies and strong demands caused the price of chicken wings to reach a historic runup in wholesale and retail prices. In May 2021, wholesale chicken wing prices peaked at $3.25 per pound, with retail prices continuing to climb.

At the start of the 2022 March Madness basketball tournament, the national average retail price of wings was around $4.29 per pound.

Just ahead of the 2023 Super Bowl and March Madness tournament, the national average price for chicken wings is down around $1.70 per pound to $2.62.

According to the National Chicken Council’s annual Chicken Wing Report, Americans are projected to consume record-breaking 1.45 billion chicken wings during Super Bowl weekend. The reasons behind this uptick, the report says, are more favorable prices, and more people getting back to normal and gathering to watch the game.
