I remember as a kid doing almost all of my shoe shopping at the "discount" shoe stores, and Payless was always our first stop. They always had an awesome selection of stuff and you never felt like you were sacrificing looks or fashion. But times have changed, and a lot of stores have had trouble keeping up. Payless is the latest example.

According to Reuters, Payless ShoeSource plans to close all 2,300 of its U.S. stores once it files for bankruptcy later this month. The report says that the company had previously filed for bankruptcy protection back in 2017. This time around Payless was unable to find a buyer, so the retailer has "decided to initiate preparations to liquidate."

If nothing else...you should be able to score some pretty decent deals; Payless announced that it will run going-out-of-business sales starting as early as next week.

Payless has at least seven locations in Northeast Iowa--Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville, Lindale Mall in Cedar Rapids, Crossroads Mall in Waterloo, Frederick Avenue in Oelwein, Shopko Mainstreet in Dubuque, Kennedy Mall in Dubuque, and 12th Avenue SE in Dyersville.

"Brick-and-mortar" retail stores have had a difficult time staying afloat in recent years, with Sears, Kmart, Younkers, Toys 'R Us & Shopko among the casualties.
