An officer-involved shooting in Waterloo resulted in the death of a man early Tuesday.

Authorities identified the victim as a 42-year-old white male, who they confirmed was shot by a Waterloo police officer. The incident happened Tuesday around 3:30 AM.

According to Waterloo police, a reckless driver tried to hit an officer's car while the officer was patrolling the residential neighborhood near Colorado and Arizona Streets. In a press release, authorities said a pursuit began and lasted for several minutes. Other officers who arrived to assist, eventually got the vehicle to stop.

Police said officers were trying to talk the man out of his vehicle when he accelerated and slammed into an occupied patrol vehicle head-on. That's when a Waterloo police officer shot at the man.

Authorities confirmed the man died from his wounds. His name was not immediately released.

According to Waterloo Police Department policy, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was notified. The Iowa DCI has taken charge of the investigation.

The officer who shot the suspect has been placed on critical incident leave pending completion of the investigation by the DCI, which is standard practice when such incidents occur. Authorities did not identify the officer involved in the shooting.
