DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — A former Dubuque library employee has been sentenced to five years of probation after pleading guilty to embezzlement.

63-year-old Barbara Nyheim was also ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and restitution to the Carnegie-Stout Public Library. She pleaded guilty in February to first-degree theft.

Court documents say an internal audit revealed Nyheim made several "no sale" transactions at a library cash register. Surveillance footage showed her pocketing late fines from library-goers.

It's unclear how much Nyheim will have to repay the library. Official records show more than $17,900 was taken between July 2012 and April 2014, but the library later submitted a restitution application for $25,000. Library director Susan Henricks told the newspaper in 2014 that about $53,000 was taken over six years.
