A committee has been formed to study the possibility of establishing a joint law enforcement center for the Floyd County Sheriff's Office and Charles City Police Department.

One of the main reasons for having a new center, is that the current Floyd County jail is 75 years old, and is extremely small by current standards.

The Joint Law Enforcement Center Committee met earlier this month (Feb. 2nd), with proposed architects for the project, Prochaska and Associates.

A new center would include space for both law enforcement agencies, plus a larger jail, magistrate court, and an office for the County Emergency Management agency.

A proposed site for the project would be next to the Floyd County Courthouse in Charles City. The estimated cost, just for the building, is between $9.2 million and $12.9 million.

The committee is scheduled to meet again on March 2nd.
