After Driving Through Iowa, Two Major Convoys Become One
There have been two convoys traveling to DC to protest mandates: the Freedom Convoy and The People's Convoy.
This afternoon, organizers of the Midwest Freedom Convoy confirm the two groups have merged as they reach the final stretches of their journeys.
Over the weekend, truck drivers and supporters from across Iowa came out to support the Midwest Freedom Convoy protest.
While drivers drove through the state, people lined overpasses waving flags to show their support for the movement. Others met drivers at various stops to drop off donations.
The first Freedom Convoy started in Canada in January to protest COVID mandates that were affecting truckers. That Convoy said Trent Thevenot one of the organizers of the Midwest Convoy, took about nine months to plan.
The convoy we saw go through Iowa this weekend was planned in two and a half weeks.
“There are parts of this that were in the planning stages for well over a month, I think, here in the US. However, here in Iowa, the group that we had on Telegram actually got wiped out along with all the other state groups about three weeks ago yesterday and it left Gina and I a really unfortunate situation of trying to recoup and recover everything in which it took a couple of days to get that all coordinated and we did and once we did, the outpouring of support came in pretty fast,” said Trevenot.
Here in the US, similar convoys are traveling to Washington D.C. to have their message heard as well- end mandates.
They’ve taken away from now, but, what's gonna happen next fall?
People showed their support with donations, and when the drivers were in Nebraska, they were faced with an overwhelming amount of donations.
“We all just thought it would be a good idea to donate those excess items to the local food pantries, food shelters. Whatever they've got in their communities, and keep those donated goods within their communities to help those that need help," said Trevenot.
The Midwest Freedom Convoy may not be in Iowa anymore but truckers are working their way towards DC.
Organizers and drivers from different convoy groups are now pulling everyone together into one united group.
