Authorities are investigating the weekend death of a woman in Independence.

Police were called to an apartment in the 1100 block of 2nd Street NE Saturday evening just before midnight. When officers arrived, they found a 29-year-old unresponsive woman.

According to Police Chief David Niedert, officers performed life-saving procedures on the victim until paramedics arrived. The woman was transported to the Independence hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Authorities are calling the woman's death suspicious. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is assisting local police with the case.

The woman's body was transported to the Iowa Medical Examiner's Office in Ankeny for an autopsy.

Officials have not yet identified the woman.

Black Hawk County Accident

Earlier Saturday, several people were injured in a two-vehicle crash south of Waterloo.

The accident happened shortly after 7:30 PM at the intersection of Iowa Highway 21/Hawkeye Road and County Road D-52/East Tama Road.

According to sheriff's officials, one of the driver's suffered severe injuries in the collision. The victim was transported to a Waterloo hospital by ambulance for treatment.

Sheriff's officials said there were multiple occupants in the other vehicle, although they didn't clarify how many. Authorities indicated that more than one of the occupants were taken to a Waterloo hospital by private vehicle to be treated for injuries. The extent of their injuries is unknown.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by La Porte City and Hudson police, Waterloo Fire Rescue, the La Porte City Fire Department and Iowa State Patrol.
