Federal Tax Filing Deadline Moved From April To May

As the country continues to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, government officials are giving Americans more time to file their federal income taxes.

The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service announced Wednesday that the federal income tax filing deadline is being extended from April 15 to May 17. The extension is automatic for everyone. Individual taxpayers do not need to file any forms or call the IRS to qualify for new deadline.

Taxpayers should pay their federal income tax due by May 17 to avoid interest and penalties. The IRS urges taxpayers who are due a refund to file as soon as possible. According to the IRS, most tax refunds associated with e-filed returns are issued within 21 days.

The extended tax deadline is for federal returns only and does not apply to state tax returns. In Iowa, the deadline to file state tax returns remains April 30.
