One of the cool things about the pandemic was the return of some of the old-school traditions, which weren't traditions back in the day, but were just the norm.

First Avenue and other parts of town have been buzzing the last few summers, and with positive activities for a change. Folks have been stepping away from their screens, shining up their classic rides and popping the top to go "cruising"!

On that note, one event that brings this activity together with an important cause is "Cruisin' for Camp Courageous". It's back this Spring, and according to its Facebook page, it's one of Iowa's largest charity car shows. It supports Camp Courageous in Monticello, whose sole mission, according to its website is to provide a summer camp for individuals with special needs.

Camp Courageous was founded in 1972 when 40 acres of land was donated for the sole purpose of establishing a camp for individuals with special needs. In 1973, five buildings were built with donated labor and materials. The first campers attended during the summer of 1974. There were 211 campers who attended this first summer. Today, Camp Courageous consists of nearly 400 acres of land, 33 buildings and serves nearly 10,000 individuals with special needs on an annual basis.

"Cruisin' for Camp Courageous" is scheduled for Sunday, May 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and features silent and live auctions, kids games and activities, food, music, and CARS...lots of 'em.
