For sports fans in Iowa, it's always about two things: college and minor league teams. And, with Hawkeye and Cyclone love going strong as ever, there will soon be a professional sports option in the Hawkeye State: soccer. This news franchise will call Iowa's capital Des Moines home, and they'll have a huge, new stadium to play in.

The United Soccer League awarded Des Moines an expansion franchise

The new, yet unnamed soccer club will debut in 2024. FOX 17 in Des Moines reports the new team is set to join the league in the 2024 season. The team will be owned by the Krause Group and CEO Kyle Krause who currently own two other lower-tier clubs.

In a video celebrating the Des Moines franchise, the United Soccer League showcases excitement in and around Des Moines.

The team will play in a brand new stadium

A new 83 million dollar stadium will be the home of the new team, according to the FOX story. The development of the stadium is nothing new, as financing plans have been in the works for some time. The stadium will be on the land that belonged to the former Superfund site, located near the George Washington Carver Bridge. Construction will begin in the fall.

The USL Championship said in a press release,

The United Soccer League today announced the addition of a USL Championship expansion club in Des Moines, Iowa. With a history of success in the pre-professional ranks, Pro Iowa will serve as the capstone for a youth-to-professional soccer pathway in the state and plans to kick off its inaugural season in 2024.
