In the last week, Iowa saw snow, rain, and cold conditions which limited farmers to 2.0 days that were suitable for fieldwork, says the Iowa Crop Progress and Conditions Report. In Iowa, the number of days suitable for fieldwork in the Northeast Iowa district was 1.1.

The state average temperature in the last week was 40.7 degrees, which was 3.6 degrees below normal.

Fieldwork activities that were possible during this time included applying anhydrous fertilizer, spreading manure, and planting oats.

Topsoil Moisture Levels Statewide and the Northeast

According to the report, topsoil moisture levels in the state rated 7 percent very short, 21 percent short, 65 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus.

In Northeast Iowa, topsoil moisture rated 0 percent very short, 6 percent short, 83 percent adequate, and 11 percent surplus.

Subsoil Moisture Levels Statewide and the Northeast

The report says subsoil moisture levels in the state rated 11 percent very short, 31 percent short, 56 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus.

In Northeast Iowa, subsoil moisture rated 1 percent very short, 7 percent short, 86 percent adequate, and 6 percent surplus.

In the state, only 13 percent of the expected oat crop was planted which is lower than last year’s number of 33 percent. In Northeast Iowa, 5 percent of the oat crop was planted.
