An annual event, Hearst Center For The Arts in Cedar Falls is hosting a day for anyone to craft a bowl in clay.

Build a bowl for the Northeast Iowa Food Bank and donate it!

An article in The Courier about the event to benefit The Northeast Iowa Food Bank's Empty Bowls campaign says that this is the 12th Annual event through Hearst Center For The Arts, that has helped families in need that the NEIFB serves.

Anyone can come to the Center. between 1:30p to 3:30p Sunday, February 13th and make a bowl from their own imagination from clay. Any design, color, or size they wish, it's completely up to the artist. They will air-dry then be placed in a kiln to be fired. After, it will be glazed clear and boxed up for delivery to the NEIFB in Waterloo.

Education coordinator, Angie Hickok says that this event is a great way for local families to help the community and have fun.

"It’s fun to do, and they know it’s for a good cause. Everyone in the family can make a bowl. People come and bring their friends and experience art and appreciate that their bowls are going to the food bank for their big fundraiser." - Angie Hickok in The Courier

There are art instructors available for questions and help. It's free and all the materials you need are provided to you. You only need your hands and your creativity. There's no such thing as a "bad bowl".

The reason for a bowl is symbolic of the need for food for underprivileged families in the Cedar Valley. All bowls will go up on auction, on March 25th at the Cedar Falls Hilton Garden Inn.

“We usually have about 10 organizations and groups that commit to making bowls, and we reach out to schools. Usually it ranges between 350 and 450 bowls each year.” - Alisha Rulapaugh, NEIFB director of engagement fron The Courier
