Thursday was Veteran's Day in the U.S., and even though we should honor our veterans every day, we especially need to pause and give thanks for the dedication for us to do so. For one Cedar Rapids veteran, he woke up and quickly made an unfortunate discovery: his truck was stolen.

Navy Veteran Don Ellis had his truck stolen

Don Ellis woke up on Thursday to discover his truck was missing. According to a KCRG report, he phoned police to tell them about the missing truck. Ellis has a security camera and at 2:50 a.m., it spotted a thief taking off with his 2020 Dodge Ram. KRCG reports Ellis was in the U.S. Navy for five years and served on board an aircraft carrier during that time.

It’s just frustrating that someone would do this ... I spent so much time and money on that truck for someone to steal it in the blink of an eye. I’m numb right now,” he said. “I don’t even know what to think. I don’t even want to eat. I put a lot of hard work into that car. -Don Ellis (KCRG)

Unfortunately, Ellis admits he did leave his keys in the vehicle, along with a spare fob needed to start the vehicle. This is likely why it was so easy for the thief to make off with the truck. Ellis also said that morning he'd planned to go to Hy-Vee to enjoy their free breakfast for all vets on Veteran's Day when he made the discovery.

Police located the truck Thursday night

Later that same evening, police were called when the truck was located by someone near the Prairie Park Fishery on Otis Road. It was driven off a steep embankment in the park and left abandoned. Police are asking for anyone with information to call Cedar Rapids police.
