The City of Oelwein is once again looking to fill an open seat on the council.
Third ward Councilman Jim Petersen's resignation was formally accepted by the council on Monday night. Petersen had submitted the resignation the week before, however the action was not on the official regular meeting agenda.

Petersen noted that he is stepping down, due to health concerns. He had missed several council sessions and committee meetings.

A special meeting was set for Monday to accept the letter, and decide how to fill Petersen's seat. Instead of calling for a special election, the council unanimously decided to fill the vacancy by appointment.

Those living in Oelwein's Third ward, were given an open invitation to let the City Hall know if they were interested in filling out the remaining ten months of Petersen's term in office.

The council is scheduled to make an appointment at the regular meeting on January 26th. Residents may still petition for a special election.

Last year, Oelwein mayor Jason Manus resigned over sexual abuse allegations involving young girls; councilperson Peggy Sherrets was initially appointed to the top spot, but residents petitioned for a special election, and ended up choosing Sherrets anyway. Sherrets' open First Ward seat was filled by Ted Malget, who was appointed.
