WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Police have arrested a Waterloo man in connection with the shooting death of a high school student in October.

18-year-old Quaderious K. Spates turned himself in to authorities Wednesday. He is charged with involuntary manslaughter and is being held on $250,000 bond.

Authorities allege Spates and 17-year-old Jazzmine Rembert were in the basement of Spates' grandmother's home when Rembert sustained a gunshot wound to her head. She later died, and officials haven't yet determined if her death was an accident or homicide.

Spates told investigators that Rembert was handling the weapon when it went off. He was originally arrested on a weapons charge.
