WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Officials in Waterloo have dropped a proposal to limit parking in front yards, following a negative response from residents.

The Waterloo City Council voted 5-2 Monday to reject an ordinance that would have required cars to be parked in existing driveways. The rule would have allowed residents to add a 10-foot-wide extension to a driveway if it's paved with asphalt or concrete.

Council members gave initial OK to the proposal during a June 1 meeting, but the measure needed additional approval to become official.

Several residents spoke against the measure when it first advanced. Councilman Steve Schmitt on Monday also said he had received negative comments about the plan through phone calls and emails.
