One Northeast Iowa school had cancelled classes for today, even before weather warnings were issued.

The Union Community School District in Laporte City called off Friday classes on Thursday, due to a staff member contracting a norovirus.

A norovirus is a very contagious illness that can infect a person through contaminated food or water, contact with an already infected individual, or by touching surfaces that are contaminated.

School officials made the announcement on their Facebook page on Thursday. The school administration notes that by calling off school for Friday, it will give them more time to thoroughly clean the building, lockers, desks and all surfaces.

Union school officials have also notified the Department of Health about the norovirus.
