Throughout the years, the CMA Awards have proven to be one of the less controversial awards shows in music (you won't find Kanye West stealing the stage from Taylor Swift or Britney Spears kissing Madonna on this show!) -- but that doesn't mean that the CMAs aren't without a little drama. As the show's 52nd anniversary approaches, the video above is a look back at some of the most controversial moments from Country Music's Biggest Night.

Over the years, many moments have led to unintended controversy, whether it was Mary Chapin Carpenter making a subtle jab at (allegedly) Dwight Yoakam in 1990 (she never confirmed it) or Faith Hill "getting mad" at Carrie Underwood for winning Female Vocalist of the Year in 2006 (she was totally joking!). And although Alan Jackson knew that he was stepping outside the lines when making a last-minute performance switch in 1999, his choice to honor George Jones hit a perfect note, causing even the CMAs to embrace it in the end.

The color red has also played a big part in controversial CMA moments over the years, both in dress and ribbon form. In 1992, Kathy Mattea took an unscripted stand for victims of AIDS while presenting an award, and one year later, Reba McEntire made her mark in a slightly different way, with a low-cut dress about which even her father had a comment! And speaking of red, let's not forget the 1975 presenter who actually set fire to the winner announcement for Entertainer of the Year.

The 2019 CMA Awards are scheduled to air on ABC on Nov. 13, at 8PM ET. The ceremony will take place live at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.
