Not everyone or everywhere can be the best and receive an 'A'.

Going to the hospital is never fun but when we have to, we want to be able to trust that we're in good care. It's important that we know that our doctors and nurses are careful to not use contaminated equipment that can make us even more sick and that they make ethical and sound decisions when it comes to our care.

Recently, The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit focused on patient safety, scored hospitals all over the nation on patient safety. It graded them on an A-D scale, focusing on metrics like:

  • MRSA (Staph) infections
  • C. diff infections (spread by contaminated equipment)
  • Infection in the blood
  • Infection in the urinary tract
  • Surgical site infection after colon surgery
  • Sepsis infection after surgery

The good news is that Iowa isn't as bad off as Illinois, who has 15 hospitals receiving the lowest "D" score. But Iowa has 7 hospitals that did receive the "D" grade. Here are the ones that The Leapfrog Group deemed unsafe:

  1. Iowa Lutheran Hospital (Des Moines)
  2. Iowa Methodist Medical Center (Des Moines)
  3. Mercy Medical Center (Cedar Rapids)
