A half-dozen kayakers had to be rescued from the Wapsipinicon River Wednesday afternoon (July 3).

The incident happened northwest of Central City in Linn County. Just after 12 noon, the Linn County Sheriff was called out to a water rescue near Sutton Road and Buffalo Drive, near the Paris Bridge Natural Area.

Fast moving currents, caused by recent rains, capsized 3 members of a group, from Cedar Rapids, Urbana, Davenport and Savanna, Illinois.

The three were able to hang on to nearby trees, until rescuers arrived by boat. The other three were able to make it to land.

All six were taken by boat, to the Pinicon Ridge Park boat ramp; no one was hurt, but none of the six were wearing life jackets.
