With much of Central and Western Iowa expecting severe weather tonight, it's increasingly possible these storms move towards Eastern Iowa.

These storms are believed to begin in western Iowa, between 5 and 7 pm and quickly move eastward.

According to Weather.gov "due to the fast movement of the storms, weather conditions will rapidly change and you should have multiple ways to receive warnings today."

Tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds are all possible in most of Iowa this evening. I'm starting to think 75 and Sunny might be a little too much to ask for this spring.

As you can see here the vast majority of Iowa has been moved into the enhanced category for severe weather, while about one-third of Iowa is being upgraded into the Moderate possibilities.

These storms are expected to continue to move East throughout the evening and could potentially hit Decorah, all the way down to Ottumwa.

Hail is also a possibility along with 40-50 mph wind gusts.

Currently, a large majority of Iowa is only at %30 possibility for hail, but precautions should be taken if possible.

These storms are expected to last into the overnight hours so you should have alternative ways to be woken up, if a warning is issued for you according to Weather.gov

What to do When Severe Weather Hits

If there is a Tornado Warning issued, you should first seek shelter. If you have a basement or a storm cellar, head toward those places.

If you don't have either of these locations, find an interior room in your house with the least amount of windows. This could include your shower or bathtub.

If you're outside, seek cover. Find a safe building nearby to reside in. If this isn't possible, lie flat in a low spot on the ground, and use your arms to protect your head and neck.

In case of a Thunderstorm Warning, you should create some type of emergency plan, for yourself, and your family. Know where to go and what to do to protect yourself.

You should avoid using telephones and other appliances during electrical storms which include your phone or household appliances. While lightning can't travel through plumbing it's best to not shower, wash dishes, or wash your hands during a thunderstorm according to CDC.gov

Iowa is the capital of the Midwest! Ok, that's unofficial, but it's my stance. Here's what NON Iowans think of us.
