The Iowa high school football season begins tonight with a full-schedule of games being played across the state.

The 2021 season features a new 5A classification for the state's 36 largest schools, which includes Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Cedar Rapids Prairie, Iowa City High, Iowa City West, Marion Linn-Mar, Marshalltown and Waterloo West.

Cedar Falls opens on the road at Johnston, and Kennedy plays at Iowa City West. Jefferson hosts intra-city rival Cedar Rapids Washington at Kingston Stadium, Prairie plays at home against Pleasant Valley, Linn-Mar faces Muscatine at home, Marshalltown hosts Ames, and Waterloo West is the home team against Waterloo East at Memorial Stadium.

Fans attending the 109th meeting between the cross-town rivals are encouraged to arrive early as parking near the stadium is reduced due to construction of the new Waterloo Career Center located at Central Middle School. According to Waterloo Schools officials, the parking area behind Central and the Career Center will not be available.

It may not be a pleasant night to watch or play high school football, especially some of the games in northern and western Iowa. National Weather Service meteorologist Craig Cogil is predicting some rough weather in parts of the state. He warns fans to prepare for the possibility of severe weather.
