CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Plans have been canceled for placing a 40-foot-tall statue in a roundabout intersection near Cedar Falls Industrial Park.

Former City Council member Barbara Brown says the controversy about roundabouts proposed for University Avenue made it hard to collect donations. Six intersections would be replaced with roundabouts, and the road would be narrowed from six lanes to four.

Said former council member Barbara Brown: "It was the roundabouts. I don't think anyone wants to have their name or their business associated with that." She leads the Public Art Committee of the city's Art and Culture Board.

The committee needed to raise $150,000 for the artwork by Richard Hunt, of Chicago. Brown says the committee raised only about $10,000.
