More than a dozen red light cameras currently operating in Waterloo will now be able to issue speeding citations.

Monday night, the City Council voted unanimously to adopt an ordinance that allows the automated traffic devices to issue tickets for both violations. Waterloo Police Chief Dan Trelka did not specify when the city would begin issuing citations using the red light cameras.

The city recently installed 13 cameras at seven different locations, where high incidences of serious crashes were common due to drivers violating red light signals. Those cameras were activated in November.

The devices are located at the following Waterloo intersections:

  • Northbound Washington Street at West 6th Street
  • Southbound Washington Street at West 6th Street
  • Northbound Washington Street at West 11th Street
  • Southbound Washington Street at West 11th Street
  • Eastbound Williston Ave. at Baltimore Street
  • Northbound Broadway Street at Parker Street
  • Southbound Broadway Street at Parker Street
  • Eastbound San Marnan Drive at Shoppers Boulevard
  • Westbound San Marnan Drive at Shoppers Boulevard
  • Eastbound Ridgeway Avenue at U.S. Highway 63/Sergeant Road
  • Northbound U.S. Highway 63/Sergeant Road at Ridgeway Avenue
  • Southbound U.S. Highway 218/La Porte Road at Shaulis Road
  • Northbound U.S. Highway 218/La Porte Road at Shaulis Road

According to city officials, the state-of-the-art automated system is designed to encourage safe driving habits. Each unit captures a high-resolution image and video of vehicles violating the signals or going too fast.

Drivers who are photographed running a red light or caught speeding would face fines of $50 to $75 for first offense, depending on the violation. The vehicle's registered owner would receive the ticket. The citations, however, won't impact driving records.
