WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — The Black Hawk County Emergency Management Commission has unanimously voted to pick RACOM Communications of Marshalltown as the vendor for an $8.7 million project to replace the countywide emergency 911 radio system.

RACOM's proposal for the project will be considered for approval by the county's Board of Supervisors on Tuesday. A formal contract with the company would be drafted for approval this fall, and construction is expected to take up to 24 months.

The commission voted Thursday for the project, which would cost well below the $15 million price tag that was estimated in 2013 when plans for the project were unveiled.
