We now know the name of the pilot of a small, ultralight plane that crashed in Clayton County.


The accident happened at about 8pm Wednesday (Aug. 22) near the Monona Airport, along Greenfield Avenue.

William Behrend of Waukon was the pilot; he told officials that the plane lost power just after taking off. He crash-landed in a nearby cornfield. Behrend, who was the only one on board, was not injured.

The accident was investigated by the Clayton County Sheriff, with assistance from Monona Police, Monona Fire and Ambulance, Farmersburg First Responders, and the Iowa State Patrol.
