One Person Dead, Another Injured in ATV Accident

One person has died and another injured in an All Terrain Vehicle Accident in Benton County.

It happened shortly before 5pm Tuesday (Jan. 5) on 64th Street, approximately 1 mile east of Shellsburg.

According to authorities, two young men, both 18 years old, were riding a Polaris 500 ATV, when it went out of control and entered a ditch.

One of the men was declared dead at the scene; the other was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Both are from Cedar Rapids, but their names have not yet been released.

The Benton County Sheriff is investigating the deadly accident; they were assisted at the scene by the Shellsburg Fire Department and First Responders, the Hiawatha Ambulance, and the Iowa State Patrol.
